One of the biggest mistakes I see agents make is allowing the market to dictate their mindset. When the market is strong, confidence is high. When it slows down, prospecting slows down as well. That’s a dangerous way to build a business because you’re tying your performance to something you have absolutely no control over. As I often say, “The market is objectively true. It changes. It goes up and down.” That’s simply the nature of real estate, and no amount of worrying will change it.
What you can control is your own inner market. That means focusing on your prospecting, your follow up, your database management and the daily disciplines that generate business regardless of market conditions. When your attention stays on process instead of prediction, you stop reacting to headlines and start creating consistent momentum. The agents who perform year after year aren’t necessarily operating in the best markets. They’re the ones who execute the fundamentals consistently, even when conditions become challenging.
I also encourage agents to build multiple sources of business rather than relying on a single stream of listings. A diversified pipeline creates what I call a more fortified business model. If one source of business slows, the others continue to support your momentum. That gives you confidence because you’re no longer dependent on one suburb, one marketing channel or one type of client to achieve your goals.
The agents who build long term careers understand that success comes from mastering the process, not trying to predict the market. If your prospecting systems are strong and your daily disciplines remain consistent, it’s much harder to get caught up in the noise of the external marketplace. Focus on what you can influence every day, and you’ll build a business that’s resilient enough to perform in any market.
